Paula’s Wacky Taffy Apples

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2/3 cup white corn syrup
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 12 apples
  • chopped if desired nuts

Directions

Insert craft sticks into stem of apples. Mix all the ingredients, except the vanilla and nuts, in a large saucepan: cook, stirring constantly, to 240 °F on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat and let cook until mixture thickens. Add vanilla. Quickly dip apples in the mixture and twist until apples are evenly coated. Place on waxed paper to drain and firm up. If desired, roll candy apples in chopped nuts.

I copied this recipe from your program several years ago. This is the BEST caramel on God's green earth! Thank you, Paula, I enjoy your cooking so much!!

Paula. I am a southern Lady such as you,my Grannie was a half Cherokee and she had many resepties,but among those left,I couldn't find a favorite of mine.Grannie used to call it TOUGH JACK. Made from Molassie's.kinda like taffey. She would mix the ingredments with the Molassee and cook (LIKE CANDY) till it thickend, then she would put on large cookie sheet.when softened we as children would have us fun. we pulled the taffie until it had a shine or gleam. it would harden.she used to Braid it.could you find the recipty and send it to my e-mail address.
