December 24th is a big day. Not only is it, obviously, Christmas Eve, but it’s also National Eggnog Day! Since Christmas Eve gets all the glory, we figured we’d shine a spotlight on the lesser holiday by sharing the same delicious eggnog recipe that Paula’s mother used to make. Your Christmas party is about to get a whole lot tastier, don’t you think?
Making eggnog is really quite simple. All you really need are the ingredients and some arm strength—there’s a good bit of beating, after all, but there’s nothing wrong with using an electric mixer if you prefer!
Start by gathering the following ingredients:
- ½ pint bourbon
- 1 pint heavy cream
- 4 pints milk
- ¾ cup sugar, divided
- 6 separated eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- 1 pinch nutmeg (optional)
In a bowl, beat the egg yolks with ½ cup of sugar until it’s thick. In another bowl, beat the egg whites with ¼ cup of sugar until it’s thick. In a third bowl, beat the cream until it’s thick.
Add the thickened cream to the yolk mixture, and fold in the egg whites. Lastly, add in the milk, bourbon, vanilla, and, if you should so choose, a pinch of —we think the nutmeg is a delicious addition, but it’s all up to you!
Be sure to chill your yummy homemade eggnog in the freezer before sharing, and serve it in a large punch bowl for maximum wow factor.
If you’re looking to celebrate National Eggnog Day with more than just the classic drink, consider one of the two yummy eggnog desserts we’ve shared below as an added bonus.
Merry Christmas, y’all!
